Imagine your mind harbors a secret.
A secret you don’t know.
Adrienne Adams wants nothing more than to pick a path in life. As an almost-twenty-one-year-old woman, she knows it’s time. If only her life could be that simple.
But nothing is as it seems, and she’s about to find that out. It’s as if everyone in her whole life has been wearing a mask. And the masks are about to come off.
Haunted by strange experiences and strong feelings that seem to come from somewhere outside of herself, Adrienne tries to move forward with discovering who she is.
The problem is, you can’t know who you are if it’s been kept from you all your life.
A nail-biting sci-fi with a touch of psychological drama, The Mind Trilogy: Adrienne’s Awakening will keep you turning pages.
Fast-paced and full of intrigue, you won’t want to put it down.
Adrienne’s Awakening is a contemporary new adult, science fiction novel.
He’s here, I text. It takes me three tries before my shaking fingers finally hit send. I squeeze my eyes shut to focus and try to slow my breathing. I hear my heart beating. It’s beating way too quickly.
My phone buzzes in my hand and I suck in a quick breath. Did he hear that? I think, afraid the buzzing was loud enough to lead him to me. My heart is hammering in my chest now. Maybe I’ve entered a stage of terror that is fatal. Scared to death. Maybe that saying isn’t just a saying.
I open my eyes, looking for any sign that he is nearby. I hold my breath to listen, willing my ears to locate the intruder. But all I can hear is the neighbor’s dog barking outside and a tick from the hall in the general direction of the thermostat. Moments later, cool air rushes at me, chilling my left side as the air from the vent travels along the floor toward me.
I shiver from the sudden chill as I stare at the message on my phone. It’s blurry. Why is it blurry? I blink and then try again.
I’m on my way, I read, where are you?
I focus on thumbing my reply.
Under my bed, I finally manage.
I try my best to push the panic down. As I finally start to slow my breathing, I feel a stabbing pain in my temple. A bright light blinds me, and it takes every ounce of my will to stay quiet.
I can feel him—in my mind.
What inspired this story?
In the book, I talk a lot about Adrienne’s vivid dreams. She has these intense dreams that seem to pull her outside of her own body and plant her into someone else’s. She has these experiences while she’s dreaming that allow her to see and feel and hear what someone else is seeing and feeling and hearing. While that isn’t the only strange thing happening in her life, it is the basis for so much of the story.
I was inspired to write this story by my own intense dreams. In my dreams, I’m much like Adrienne in that I’m often still me but looking at the world through someone else’s eyes. I can feel what that person is feeling and know what they are thinking. And…well, if I say any more, I’m afraid I’ll start spoiling all the surprises in the novel. — Mindy Schoeneman
What do beta readers have to say about the story?
“If you like mysteries, or the supernatural, or psychological complexities, you’ll love Adrienne’s Awakening.” — Marisa P.
Adrienne’s Awakening will have you distrusting every person in Adrienne’s life, leary of their intentions. “But it also left me wanting to know more about each [character],” Marisa wrote.
“Truly, it’s really well done. I’m sucked in.” — Kim W.
The hope for answered questions and calm that will keep you turning the pages. But like any masterful author, Mindy gives no indication whether this tangled ball of psychological yarn can be untangled to a happy ending.
“I have a longing as I read for it all to come out in the wash, for Adrienne to wake up, rub the sleep out of her eyes, pour a cup of coffee and have breakfast in her pajamas with a less angsty group of friends and family members and say, ‘Wasn’t that a crazy dream? I’m so glad it was just a dream.’” — Marisa P.
And that’s what Mindy has incorporated into her story—the feeling of uncertainty, that you never truly know if it will end well until you make it to that point.
“You know you’ve crossed over into crazy writer territory when you think, ‘My protagonist, Knox, should so date this protagonist in Mindy Durbin Schoeneman’s novel.’” — Shayla E.
Adrienne is a character many will love and some will recognize as a familiar person with flaws and strengths and weaknesses, like the rest of us. Her story, though, has a twist that leads each reader to new territory.
“I can’t think of a single other story that has a similar concept, which is so refreshing.” — Annie H.
